Summer is creeping towards us and with it the start of the festival season. Alex Regan presents a roundup of some of the UK's literary festivals. (Part two will follow later in the year, as more festivals announce their lineups.)
Barnes Children’s Literature Festival: 11th to 12th May 2019
2019 marks the fifth year of the Barnes Children’s Literature Festival. Over the weekend, there will be a variety of events on, such as talks and storytelling from best-selling children’s authors and illustrators – including Francesca Simon, author of the Horrid Henry series! All of the talks and events are aimed at different age groups, and these range from 0 years old to 16+.
Darlington Writer’s Festival: 17th to 20th May 2019
The Darlington Writer’s Festival is part of the Darlington Arts Festival. Over the weekend, people will have the opportunity to take part in various writing workshops so that people can learn about and improve their skills in poetry and fiction. The evening of 19th May includes an open mic for writers, which will give each reader up to eight minutes to share their work to the audience.
Derby Book Festival: 31st May to 8th June 2019
Derby Book Festival is a nine-day long celebration of literature. Books of all genres are featured in the festival, from fiction to sport to business. Over the nine days, a variety of writing workshops and talks will be held, featuring celebrated authors such as Markus Zusak who wrote The Book Thief. The organisers also run a 50 word flash fiction competition, which is open now and closes on 8th May 2019.
Monty Lit Fest: 14th to 16th June 2019
Montgomeryshire Literary Festival, better known as Monty Lit Fest, was founded in 2018 and is a celebration of Welsh writing and literature. A long list of speakers has already been announced, including authors, agents, journalists, and the winners of the New Welsh Writing Awards 2019. The winners of this competition will be announced 24th May 2019.
Hastings Literature Festival: 30th August to 1st September 2019
2019 will be the second year of the Hastings Literature Festival. The list of authors who will be giving talks at the festival hasn’t yet been released, but the line-up of writing workshops has been confirmed, and this includes a ‘Storytelling with puppets’ workshop for children aged 10 and over. Like the Derby Book Festival, the Hastings Literature Festival also features competitions for short stories, poetry, and flash fiction. These competitions are open until 30th June 2019.
